SpotNews Blogger Template Remarkable Review

Table of Contents

Welcome to our full review of the SpotNews Blogger Template. This is a dark mode ready news theme from Templateify that suits solo publishers and small editorial teams. The short answer is yes. It is a strong free choice for a news blog if you accept the limits of version 1.0.0 and the lack of free support.

If you want to compare it with another lean news layout from the same author look at the Plexify Blogger Template too. SpotNews theme was released in February 2022 and it follows the same light coding habits.

SpotNews Review Through the Eyes of a Breaking News Editor

Breaking news sites live and die by speed. A reader lands on the page and wants the freshest headline within two seconds. SpotNews Template respects that habit. The demo opens with a Breaking label and a headline strip right above the main header so urgent stories never get buried.

The Breaking Strip and Header

The strip rotates six headlines and each one links straight to its story. It is driven by a label so an editor only needs to tag a post as Breaking and it appears. The header also holds a search icon and a dropdown menu and a mega menu. I set up the mega menu with four labels and it took less than ten minutes.

Home Page Layout That Guides the Eye

Under the header sits a five story grid with a large lead tile and smaller tiles around it. Below that the theme shows label based sections for Coding and Tech plus Design and Business. The Latest Post feed ends with a Load More button instead of old page numbers. Readers keep scrolling without a full reload and that suits a feed that grows all day.

One thing to watch. The section blocks looked like empty headings when I loaded the page without scripts. They seem to depend on JavaScript to pull posts so a blocked script leaves blank areas.

A Simple Publishing Routine for Small Teams

A newsroom needs a repeatable routine more than fancy options. This is the order I followed after installing the theme on a clean blog.

  1. Upload the XML file from the Theme menu and restore it.
  2. Create the labels you want for sections such as Politics or Sports or Tech.
  3. Open the Layout page and point each home section to its label.
  4. Tag every urgent story with the Breaking label so it enters the strip.
  5. Add a thumbnail to every post because the grid tiles depend on images.
  6. Refresh the home page and check the strip on a phone.

Following the same order each time keeps the home page predictable. Skipping the thumbnail step is the mistake beginners make most often.

Pick five labels and stay with them for a year. A news blog with forty random labels confuses readers and weakens every section block.

Dark Mode and Right to Left Reading

Dark mode is built in and readers can switch to it when they browse at night. That matters more than it sounds for a news audience. The SpotNews also ships a right to left version and the demo links to an Arabic preview for that reason. Publishers in Arabic or Urdu or Hebrew will appreciate not having to rebuild the layout by hand.

Speed and Ad Spaces

The author promotes fast loading and compressed code. The demo marks Responsive Advertisement slots under the header and between home sections and inside the sidebar. That gives you three natural places for banners without touching the code. The author also calls the code AdSense friendly. Approval still depends on your content and your policy compliance.

Important note. Replace every lorem ipsum story and every 2016 sample date before you apply for any ad program. Demo content on a live site hurts trust with readers and reviewers.

Publishers who want a second opinion on grid styles can also open the Finkuber Blogger Template and compare how each theme handles story density.

Honest Weak Points

No theme is perfect and SpotNews has a few rough edges that you should know before you commit to it for a daily news site.

  • It is version 1.0.0 with no free support so you depend on the documentation and the community.
  • The demo uses lorem ipsum text and 2016 dates and mismatched labels so everything needs checking.
  • Home sections rely on scripts and stay blank if a script is blocked.
  • The mega menu looks empty when labels are not set up with care.
  • I did not find a built in live blog block or a correction badge so those need custom work.

None of these are deal breakers for a focused news blog. They simply show that the SpotNews theme is a fast starting point and not a full newsroom system.

Which Version Should You Choose

SpotNews Blogger Template
SpotNews Blogger Theme Arabic

There is a free Arabic version protected by copyright that was localized by Picktemplates. There is also a free English version protected by copyright and a paid English version created by the designer Templateify. The free copies expect you to keep the footer credit intact so plan your branding around that.

Conclusion

SpotNews gives small news projects a fast and tidy home page with a real breaking strip and dark mode and a mega menu. It is easy to learn and it rewards a clean label structure.

It is not perfect. You get no free support and editorial extras like live blogs or correction notices need extra work. Replace the demo content and test on a phone before launch.

Expert opinion from Mouhssine Boukou with 10 years of experience. I would pick SpotNews for a focused news or sports blog that publishes ten to thirty stories a day. I would skip it for a heavy investigative site that needs live blogs and author hubs out of the box. Keep your labels few and your thumbnails sharp and the theme will serve you well.
